Help:Advanced formatting help

From Diversity Workbench
Jump to: navigation, search

This topic discusses advanced methods for Wiki content authors. It is currently very incomplete, based on an adaptation of an earlier text intended for JSPWiki to MediaWiki. Please help finishing this topic, by expanding topics and adding links to the MediaWiki documentation!

Interwiki links

You can create links between different Wikis without specifying the exact URL. For example, [[Wikipedia:Phytopathology]] = Wikipedia:Phytopathology points to a Wikipedia topic. Interwiki links are not case sensitive; i. e. [[wikipedia:Phytopathology]] has the same effect.

The list of supported interwiki prefixes can be viewed by everyone under Special: Interwiki. However, most content authors cannot change this list.

Footnotes

Footnotes (or rather endnotes) can be created by enclosing text (especially citations, but also any notes) in <ref></ref> tags.

The position of the footnotes must be defined by an additional <references/> tag. If this tag is omitted, the footnotes will not be present.

Tables

Simple tables may be created using pipe symbols ('|'). Double pipe symbols in the first rows create table heading rows, single pipe symbols create data rows.

Variables ("Magic words")

You can use predefined variables such as {{PAGENAME}} = Advanced formatting help. Please refer to the MediaWiki documentation for further information.

Extension tags

MediaWiki has an extensible architecture. Extensions may define additional tags (e. g., the <ref></ref> tags explained above are installed by the CITE extension). A list of active extensions and the tags they support can be found under Special:Version.
