Diversity GIS Editor is an application component of the database framework Diversity Workbench. It might be installed as part of a DWB environment, but also be used as a stand-alone application, e. g., in a local installation.

The Diversity GIS Editor is a tool to create, visualize, edit and store samples within a geographical environment. It may be used as a stand-alone application or as a component integrated as part of other DWB applications, i. e. DiversityCollection, DiversityGazetteers and DiversitySamplingPlots.

In combination with a background map, equipped with world coordinates, collections of Microsoft SQL Geometry Objects (points, lines and areas) may be displayed and edited in their geographical context. The screen and world coordinates of the objects will be calculated and shown in the status line. Color, thickness and transparency of the elements can be adjusted. The working area which keeps the maps and objects may be shifted or zoomed.

The background map could either be loaded from a storage device or created with an online map server tool provided by the editor. Other maps without world coordinates may be adjusted to the background map easily by setting 3 pairs of reference points on the background and the new map. The calculated world coordinates will be assigned and stored when the new map is saved.

A GPS functionality has been integrated. If a GPS device is connected, the current position will be displayed and - if an applicable background map is loaded - marked on the map.

Software

Online manual

The manual is provided as pdf file (for current version check DWB user manuals) and compiled help file in CHM (= MS online help format). The compiled help file is available for separate download but is included in the zip archive of the client application as well. Working material and brief instructions in German are available for download under http://wiki.bayernflora.de/web/Diversity_GIS_Editor (GIS material and maps with focus on Bavaria).

The GIS Editor application

Current version

The GIS Editor application is built for Microsoft .Net Framework 3.5 or higher. Please make sure you have the correct version of this software already installed on your computer! (Check under control panel -> Software for Microsoft .Net Framework).

Download the GIS-Editor application 2.2.5.0, September 20th, 2016

New features and fixes:

  • Web browser window adapted due to changes in Google Maps API
  • Getting altitude values from GeoNames server when saving shapes is enabled again
  • GPS Exchange File support added: Read shapes from GPX files
  • OSM service: Deactivated MapQuest layers replaced by ESRI Aerial World and Komoot Topo World

  • Download the .Net framework (see General Download Notes)
  • Download the Microsoft Access Database Engine which is necessary for reading ArcGIS dBase attribute files. Be sure to select the 64bit english version (AccessDatabaseEngine_X64.exe), because the 32bit version does not work properly!

Previous versions

Th GIS Editor application is built for Microsoft .Net Framework 3.5 or higher. Please make sure you have the correct version of this software already installed on your computer! (Check under control panel -> Software for Microsoft .Net Framework).

Features of the GIS-Editor application 2.2.4.2, January 8th, 2016

New features and fixes:

  • Display significant progress bars for reading and writing big ArcView shape files
  • Replace commas with decimal points for non integer parameters when reading TAB separated shape files
  • Settings slider values conversion adapted to one digit after decimal point
  • Assign tool tips for icon object markers, too
Features of the GIS-Editor application 2.2.4.1, October 12th, 2015

New features and fixes:

  • Toggle button rightclick: If checked, uncheck all other buttons; if unchecked: Check all other buttons.
  • Interface call from other DWB applications: If no coordinates are sent for Web browser adaption, zoom in to 50% to reduce multiple world display.
Features of the GIS-Editor application 2.2.4.0, October 2nd, 2015

New features and fixes:

  • Read Shapes: Open File dialog will be shown if no online map could be displayed correctly to allow manual loading of a local map.
  • Read ArcGIS shapes: Select Attribute dialog extended to assign ID and Description from dBase attributes, if any.
  • Save Button: No Save File dialog is shown any more, if no shapes are available for saving (e.g. just adapted maps), to avoid confusion when saving maps coordinates.
  • Save Button (Bugfix): Coordinates of georeferenced maps have only been saved, when "Save as SQL Geo Objects" was selected. Now they are saved in any case.
  • Load maps (Bugfix): The artificial background map of georeferenced maps, which were not strictly north aligned, has been calculated wrongly, which might have caused incorrect aspect ratios on the working area. This has been fixed.
  • GPS: The current position will only be displayed, if more than 3 satellites are available.
  • ArcGIS shapes support:
    • Adapted to 64bit MS Access Database Engine for reading dBase attribute files.
    • Bugfix: Boundary calculation when saving multi object shapes has been corrected.
    • Bugfix: Attributes from dBase attribute file have not been shown if there was just one line.
Features of the GIS-Editor application 2.2.3.5, June 16th, 2015

New features and fixes:

  • Help support by pressing the Windows Help key (usually 'F1' key).
  • Normally, when loading a shape, an appropriate map is generated automatically. But if the GIS Editor is offline, this is not possible. Thus a new feature has been added to allow loading a local map, if the creation from a map service fails.
Features of the GIS-Editor application 2.2.3.4, March 6th, 2015

New features and fixes:

  • New assignment for TAB separated text files import added: MTB/Q (German Messtischblatt)
Features of the GIS-Editor application 2.2.3.3, January 13th, 2015

New features and fixes:

  • GIS Editor import wizard implemented to load samples from TAB separated text files (with file name extension .shp2)
  • When touching a toggle button of the sample list with the mouse, the appropriate geography object will be illuminated
Features of the GIS-Editor application 2.2.3.2, October 23rd, 2014

New features and fixes:

  • Bugfix: Create tooltips for geo objects when reading ArcView shapes
  • Bugfix: Clockwise created polygons must be reverted for saving them as SQL geographies. The vertices of the polygons themselves at the working area must be reverted, too, otherwise in edit mode the adjacent vertices are catched.
Features of the GIS-Editor application 2.2.3.0, October 13th, 2014

New features and fixes:

  • Sample Detection tool added
  • New shape format added for saving: TAB separated text files (could be imported by DWB modules Import Wizard)
  • Support for ArcView shape dBase files (attributes):
Switched to Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0 to support 64 bit operating systems
Read attributes when loading shape files
Write attributes when saving shape files
